I recommend looking in the mirror first. I believe that as a nation we have failed to live up to our end of the bargain as citizens. Instead, as with most areas of our culture, we have opted instead to become consumers. We go to the voting booth and pull the lever and feel that we have simultaneously elected a leader and abdicated our responsibilities to create the nation we want to live in. Now it is the President’s and Congresses job to “fix’ our country, after all that’s why we elected them right? Say what you will about either the Tea Partiers or the OWS movement, at least they are taking up the mantle of responsibility to make their voices heard. They are taking advantage of our freedom to associate and create communities.

citizenship

I believe what we really need are elected officials that create leadership, we do not need more leaders. Leaders are how we got into this mess. From a systems perspective though, we need to go beyond our ideas of American citizenship to recognize that we are all world citizens. It is impossible to put the brakes on globalization, the genie is out of the bottle (and really always has been, it’s just our current technology which is accelerating the rate of change). A rising tide lifts all boats, but also keep in mind that all of our oceans are connected.

and I am definitely feeling good about my decision to pursue this Masters degree. After one class day I’m already refreshed in my approach to my job and brimming with new ideas and epiphanies for managing my team(s).
